Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter spoke about "paying to play" after software sales fell 15% these past couple of months. The fault? Online multi-player games that give alot of replay value but at the same time make those same people less inclined to buy new video games.

"...we think that the overall decline was due to a very large number of people playing multiplayer online games for free on PlayStation Network, and for an annual fee with unlimited game play on Xbox Live," Pachter noted. "We estimate that a total of 12 million consumers are playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 for an average of 10 hours per week on the two platforms’ respective networks, and the continued enjoyment of this game (along with an estimated 6 million Halo online players, 3 million EA Sports players, and 5 million players playing other games, such as Battlefield, Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead and Grand Theft Auto) has sucked the available time away from what otherwise would be spent playing newly purchased games."

Some so called "evidence" of possible future pay to play system.

Infinity Ward spawned one of the bigger controversies in gaming last year when they announced the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 would use peer-to-peer matchmaking in lieu of traditional dedicated servers. That's a history that won't be repeating itself with Call of Duty: Black Ops, though, as Treyarch president Mark Lamia has confirmed they're sticking with dedicated servers.
"I think dedicated servers are excellent. I don't see any reason not to see them unless... well, I just don't see any reason not to," Lamia said to PC Zone magazine (via CVG). "It seems people like them and we're excited about what we're doing right now."

Even still, Lamia also said they're working on bringing some of the console matchmaking features to their dedicated servers, while maintaining the customizable nature of the dedicated server experience. "We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides," Lamia said. "We're working very hard to marry those two things, so people can run dedicated servers and also participate in the communal experience the console players get to have, given they're all on first-party servers."

Meanwhile, CVG also reports that a new Black Ops preview in the Official Xbox Magazine reveals the game won't just have vehicles the player rides in, but can control entirely. This apparently includes the SR-71 Blackbird we've previously heard about (and which was previously unclear whether it was entirely in the player's control or not), as well as helicopters that the mag "stresses" are fully controllable, which will even provide helicopter-vs-hellicopter air battles.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is launching on the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii on November 9.

will Call of Duty: Black Ops be pay-to-play?

The answer to that question is NO. Josh Olin, Treyarch community manager, has squashed rumours of a subscription-based Call of Duty game. Confirming this on his Twitter (JD_2020), Olin writes

No, you will not have to ‘Pay to Play’ #CODBlackOps Multiplayer either. Rumor -> Squashed. – Josh Olin

they are fokin crazy ... the game itself like 70 box.. 3 dlc 15 box each , premium online account 120 box / year = 260 $ for a game.. and I dont count the dedicated server into it .. man Suspect this is horrible.

I really hope that is not true because it seems the end for online gaming .. very bad market business from Activision

Ive search everywhere on the web and I didnt see any conformation from Activision/treyarch... Josh Olin from Treyarch had crushed that rumor since couple mounth, but now in many forums the rumor goes on and its about Activision this time and they are known for their paying games ( Blizzard... Warcraft,, guitarhero )

they did 20 millions only with the DLC of cod modern 2 ! ( from pc and console users ) its insane they know theres some money to make with the online playing.

anyway I still looking for more info
